Specialty Classes

Handwork (cont'd)
7th graders take on a bit more complex project, progressing from their own two-dimensional drawing of an animal to developing a pattern from that drawing to stitching a three-dimensional stuffed animal. In conjunction with history lessons on the industrial revolution, 8th graders learn the mechanics of a sewing machine as well as how to use one while making themselves an article of clothing, such as a pair of pajamas. Each of these projects is very involved for its particular age group. In addition to the practical skills and logical thinking required to complete the various items, students are learning about process, determination, flexibility, workmanship and capability. Waldorf students are encouraged to believe that by breaking any project down into manageable components, there is nothing they cannot accomplish!

Music
Singing is part of every school day at River Valley Waldorf School. In 1st and 2nd grade, everyone sings together. In 3rd grade, call and response singing and rounds are introduced. In 4th grade, more complex rounds and harmonies are taught, as well as music notation.

The songs that are sung reflect the seasons, the traditions held by class families and music related to the curriculum – for example, madrigals often accompany 7th grade Renaissance studies. more >
