Foreign Languages
River Valley Waldorf students receive instruction in both Spanish and German, beginning in first grade. Much like infants learn their mother tongue, classes the first few years are oral; incorporating games, rhymes and songs. Written work and grammar begin in 4th grade, progressing to some literature-based work in the middle school years.

Why two languages? The answer is manifold. The Waldorf curriculum seeks balance; each language derives from different linguistic roots. Each brings a different flavor of humanity to the students, who are exposed to the culture of that language. We strive to help students become open to and curious about cultures other than their own.

Handwork
Fiber arts and needlework enhance and support the artistic, practical and academic lessons at River Valley Waldorf School. Beginning in 1st grade, children learn to knit very simple objects. 2nd graders complete more complex knitting projects and learn to crochet. In 3rd grade, a three-dimensional doll or farm animal is knitted by each student. 4th graders reinforce their study of fractions with complex, original counted cross-stitch designs and other beautiful, practical needlework. 5th grade students knit a pair of socks – a project requiring 4 needles! In 6th grade the children study the human proportion; they create and clothe a soft doll using their own pattern. more >
